WHITE TIGERS ARE GOLD DIVISION FINALISTS AT THE 2006 VIRGINIAN. The Red and White Tigers successfully hosted 51 teams at the Quantico Marine Base over the weekend in the U10 boys Gold, Silver and Bronze Divisions and the U9, U10 boys and U10 girls Festival Division as part of the SYC Virginian Memorial Day Tournament. WHITE TIGERS 4-CHANTILLY TITANS 0. Opening strong the White Tigers claimed a 4-0 victory over Chantilly to open the tournament. Two goals by Charlie highlighted a complete game by the offense and the continued sharp play in the back, led by Colby in goal, kept Chantilly off the scoreboard and started the Tigers on their way toward a great weekend. WHITE TIGERS 6-ARLINGTON TRAVEL SOCCER CLUB FIRESTORM 1. Spotting ATSC the first goal the Tigers roared back to gain a 6-1 victory in game two of the tournament. The offense was hitting on all cylinders in this game, developing multiple chances to score. Meanwhile the defense clamped down after letting in the first goal to hold firm the rest of the way. The Tigers ended the first day with 2 wins and 0 loses. MATT SCORPIONS 3-WHITE TIGERS 2. The White Tigers came out flat on Sunday morning and dropped a 3-2 decision to the MATT Scorpions. The Scorpions raced out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half before the Tigers could get revved up. Eventually SYC was able to knot the score at 2-2 in the second half and generated a great deal more pressure on the MATT goal; missing several quality chances to take the lead. A mistake the back late in the game gave MATT the opportunity they had been looking for and they took advantage for a 3-2 win. This result left the Tigers, MATT and Arlington in a 3-way tie for the division on points. Because the Tigers had generated more tie-breaking bonus points in their earlier wins they advanced to the semifinals. WHITE TIGERS 5-LMVSA HAWKS 4. In one of the more scintillating youth soccer games the White Tigers edged out our LMVSA neighbors 5-4 in the U-10 Gold semifinal to advance to the Monday finals. Our games with LMVSA are always hard fought and this was one of the classics. SYC started the scoring on an outstanding shot by Alejandro. LMVSA equalized a few minutes later on a nice cross. SYC came right back on an Obi breakaway and took a 2-1 lead into the half. The hot weather and the superb play made the second half an emotional, energy-draining affair. LMVSA was quick to jump back into a 2-2 tie once the half started. SYC countered with strong shot by Andrew and a 3-2 lead when a penalty kick was assessed on LMVSA. LMVSA stormed right back to knot the score at 3-3 and in very short order took a 4-3 lead. The White Tigers would not let this game get away though and on a beautiful Alejandro corner kick Kyle put the ball in the back of the net and the teams were locked up again at 4-4. As time was winding down the game looked to be headed to overtime when SYC was awarded a free kick in the middle of the field. Alejandro sent a sharp ball into the LMVSA penalty area and Kyle was able to head the ball into the net for a 5-4 lead. Time expired shortly after and the White Tigers were on their way to the finals. U-10 GOLD FINALS: TAKOMA PARK 4-WHITE TIGERS 1. On an extremely hot day the White Tigers fell short in their quest for the U-10 Gold title against a very talented Takoma Park Rangers team. Takoma took an early 1-0 lead and the Tigers struggled through most of the half to contain the Ranger attack. The SYC defense bent but didn’t break and at the half the score was 1-0 Takoma. The Tigers regained their footing a bit on the second half and began to threaten the Takoma goal. Alejandro was eventually able to get off a strong shot that the goalie couldn’t handle and the score was tied 1-1. The Tigers continued to play attacking soccer and had several near misses but couldn’t get the lead. As time crept toward the last ten minutes the momentum shifted again when Takoma broke through on an exceptional run down the right side and an angled volley that gave them a 2-1 lead. This forced the Tigers to play forward to get the equalizer and Takoma was able to grab two more goals before the whistle blew. Not the result the Tigers were looking for but still a very successful tournament and a great stepping stone into the last games of the NCSL season and the summer. Congratulations Takoma Park. - LG |

7 - 0 Continuously pushing forward on a very windy day the White Tigers bested the Scorpions 7-0. Goals later by Alejandro, Obi, and Tommy, plus a rock solid defense with Chu Chu, Tommy and George chasing down any threats, meant the Tigers never looked back in 7-0 win. - LG |

5/13/06 - Tigers shut-out PWSI Courage White
3 - 0 In a game shortened by a late start the White Tigers overcame PWSI 3-0. The Tigers were a constant force in front of the PWSI goal throughout the match and when tested by the PWSI offense the Tiger defense once again held firm. Andrew broke the ice for the Tigers in the first half with a well struck left-footed shot from the top of the box. A fast first half ended with SYC up 1-0. The 1st half pattern continued in the second as the Tigers pressed home the attack. Goals by Obi and George gave SYC a 3-0 lead while tough defense and stalwart goalkeeping by Colby and Kyle preserved a 3-0 win. - LG |

4/30/06 - Tigers lose to LMVSA Hawks
2 - 4 The Tigers once again faced the LMVSA Hawks on Sunday morning and ended up on the short end of a 4-2 score. LMVSA was quickly on the offensive in this game, creating several first half opportunities. By the end of the half the Hawks had a 2-0 lead and the White Tigers were playing catch up. The Tigers did play a much better second half and had chances to score. An excellent cross by Alejandro was knocked in by Charlie and a long kick by Obi got past the Hawk goalie but by then the game was out of reach and the Tigers went down 2-4. - LG |

4/09/06 - Tigers Top CYA Shock 3 - 0 WHITE TIGERS TOP THE SHOCK 3-0. The White Tigers overcame a tough CYA Shock team in game two of the NCSL season. Moving the ball well on offense and once again playing aggressive defense the Tigers put together two solid halves of soccer. In the early stages of the first half both teams created opportunities but were unable to capitalize. Midway through the half Obi took things into his own hands with an impressive shot from the top of the box giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Shortly after that Obi struck again when he caught the Shock by surprise with a long distance shot, putting the Tigers up 2-0 at the half. The Tigers continued to apply pressure in the second half and, after a series of great passes, Colby broke through from the left site for a 3-0 Tiger lead. With James displaying exceptional skill in goal the Tigers withstood several Shock attempts to score and came away with a 3-0 win. - LG |

4/02/06 - Tigers Start the Spring Season with a Draw 2 - 2 WHITE TIGERS RALLY TO TIE FREDERICKSBURG! It was a tale of two different halves in the opening game of the spring ’06 NCSL season as the White Tigers fought back for a 2-2 draw against a talented Fredericksburg Hotspurs team. After surrendering two first half goals the Tigers came out strong in the second half. Several well orchestrated attacks and a staunch Tiger defense resulted in numerous opportunities to score. After several players sent shots over and around the goal, Obi found the back of the net with a strong shot from the top of the penalty box. Just a few minutes later Obi struck again and the score was knotted 2-2. With precise passing and a stifling defense The Tigers continued to threaten the Hotspur goal throughout the half but time expired before the Tigers could strike again. - LG |

March 25-26, 2006 WHITE TIGERS BEGIN 2006 MSI MARCH MADNESS WITH A DRAW. Like last week’s opening round in the Stafford tournament the Tigers began the day with a draw, this time against the Mclean Titans. The day started poorly for the Tigers when early confusion in the back led to an open shot and 1-0 Mclean lead. The Tigers buckled down from that point on and the half ended 1-0. The second half saw the Tigers come out much stronger and with a beautiful side step and a strong shot Obi knotted the score 1-1. The Tigers continued to attack throughout the second half, even hitting the post from very close, but in the end could not penetrate the Titan defense. At the whistle it was Tigers 1—Mclean 1. TIGERS WIN MARCH MADNESS GAME TWO 6-0. The Tigers comfortably beat an under aged Cleveland Blues team 6-0. The game started a little slowly for the Tigers who ultimately converted several chances into two goals by halftime. The second half was all Tigers, as they added four additional goals from the numerous opportunities they created and the game ended 6-0. This win was not enough to send the Tigers through to the semifinals as Mclean advanced on goal differential by beating Cleveland by a larger margin. TIGERS CLOSE OUT MARCH MADNESS 4-1 OVER THE BSA RAGE. The White Tigers won their final tune up for the spring ’06 NCSL season with a 4-1 win over the BSA Rage from Reading, PA. The Tigers started early in this one with George blasting home an early goal for a quick 1-0 win. After witnessing the 10-year old version of a bicycle kick that tied the score 1-1 the Tigers coupled strong defense with good passing to take control of the game. Tommy tallied two goals with strong runs and great shots and, after an outstanding cross from the right side, Darren headed home a lovely goal from 15 feet out. The Tigers finished March Madness 2-0-1. - LG |

The White Tigers finished Finalist in the U10 North Division of the 2006 Stafford Saint Patrick's Day Tournament. WHITE TIGERS OPEN THE 2006 STAFFORD TOURNAMENT WITH A 2-2 DRAW! The SYC White Tigers met the Lee-Mount Vernon Hawks in a cold, somewhat windy opening round of the Stafford Tournament and battled to a 2-2 draw. The Tigers and Hawks have played several times and each game with our next door neighbors has been close. LMVSA opened the scoring in the first half and mid-way through the half had extended their lead to 2-0. But Kyle was able to get a goal back just before the intermission to leave the score LMVSA 2-SYC 1 at the break. Both teams had opportunities in the second half with George poking the ball in on a low cross from Alejandro to knot the game at 2-2. Though there were several near misses the defenses of both teams held fast and at the final whistle the game ended as a 2-2 draw. WHITE TIGERS EDGE THE VISTA VENOM 1-0 IN GAME TWO OF THE STAFFORD TOURNAMENT! Pressing the VISTA defense throughout and playing a stifling defense that limited VISTA’s chances to score, the White Tigers took game 2 of the Stafford Icebreaker 1-0. Vince, Chuchu, and Tommy were rock solid in the back and anything that even came close was scooped up by goalies, Colby in the first half and Chuchu in the second half. Meanwhile the Tiger offense generated several opportunities to score but in the end settled for a break away goal in the first half by Obi that put them up for good 1-0. WHITE TIGERS SHUT DOWN THE REDLAND COBRAS 2-0, TAKE GAME THREE! Knowing the winner went to the finals the White Tigers faced an excellent opponent in the Redland (Harrisburg, PA) Cobras in game 3 of the Stafford Icebreaker and came away with a 2-0 victory. Both teams played tenacious defense and hard-nosed, ball possession soccer in a first half that finished 0-0. In the second half the offenses of both teams opened up a bit and created numerous chances to score. Redland saw one shot bounce off the crossbar and another off the post, SYC’s Andrew hit the bottom of the cross bar of the Redland goal but the ball went straight down and was gathered in by the goalie. With Obi speeding past the Redland defense the Tigers finally found the opening they were looking for and pushed ahead 1-0. Not long before the end of the game, after a Tiger corner kick resulted in a wild scramble in front of the Redland goal, Obi was able to get his foot on the ball and ice a 2-0 win for the Tigers. TIGERS DROP A EXHILARATING, OVERTIME FINAL IN THE STAFFORD ICEBREAKER! The White Tigers met the Ashburn Storm in the finals of the Stafford Icebreaker in a game that was only decided after two 5 overtime periods and 3 rounds of penalty kicks. Once again the defenses of both teams stood tall with Vince, James, Chuchu Chuchu and Tommy holding Ashburn scoreless through 70 minutes of scintillating soccer. Colby was brilliant in goal, including a breathtaking save of a point blank Ashburn shot in the second half. SYC offenses tried to find a seam through Ashburn’s defense but none appeared and 60 minutes of regulation ended 0-0. The defenses continued to hold the advantage through 2 five-minute overtime periods leaving the teams deadlocked and headed for a penalty kick shootout. Through a combination of near misses, great saves and well placed shots the two teams ended the first 5 PKs tied 3-3 and stepped up for five more kicks apiece. This time the goalies proved invincible as all ten shots were turned away and the teams remained even. This meant 1v1 penalty kicks until one side had the advantage. On the third kick Ashburn drove an untouchable shot into the lower right corner of the goal leaving SYC with a make or break shot. With parents, players and Stafford officials watching and with three cell phones giving the play-by-play to the Red Tigers preparing to play at another field, that shot was a bullet that rattled the cross bar but stayed out leaving Ashburn victorious. Kudos to Ashburn for a hard fought win—kudos to all the Tigers for an outstanding tournament to begin the Spring ’06 season. - LG |

11/06/05 - Tigers End Season with a Draw 2 - 2
On a
beautiful autumn afternoon,
the CYA Earthquakes visited the White Tigers at
The Tigers continued to be aggressive with Darren, Charlie and Andrew providing constant pressure, but a solid defensive performance by the speedy left fullback of the Earthquakes prevented the Tigers from recording another tally. There was a good amount of pressure applied by the Earthquakes but Conner, Vince and James were up to the task and consistently thwarted the attacks of the talented Earthquakes. Any attack that got past the Tigers solid defense was snuffed out by Colby, who was tending the twine and often started the counter attack with booming punts or well placed outlet throws to streaking defensemen. The final minute of the half produced CYA's first goal and gave the Earthquakes some momentum going into the second half.
In the final half the Tigers had the wind and the "downhill" field on their side. Combining a hard field with the elements proved to be a trying experience as the breakaways the Tigers got in the first half turned into passes just beyond their marks. James relieved Colby in goal to start the half and provided solid play while Colby and the offense continued to rattle the Earthquakes. The Earthquakes really stepped up their team defense and mounted several counterstrikes but Conner continued to lead a solid defensive effort. The Quakes were able to record an equalizer in the 40th minute and even the contest at 2 goals a piece. The Tigers roared back but were unable to convert several quality chances and the hard fought contest ended in a 2-2 draw. - MP |

10/31/05 - Tigers Go Down in Defeat 1 - 3 The White Tigers faced Herndon in what would be a battle of the unbeaten. Both teams were ready for the challenge on a crisp morning with the wind, ghosts and goblins howling at Franconia Park. In the 4th minute of play Herndon, on a scramble in the box off a corner kick, put the Tigers down 0-1 early. This was one of the few times this year the Tigers have been behind in a game and they put heavy pressure on Herndon's defense throughout the first half.
That pressure led to several scoring chances but the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net when very good scoring chances by Kyle, Obi and Charlie rolled wide of the post. Obi continued to apply pressure and finally got a call going his way which did result in a direct kick 25 yards outside of the Herndon goal in the 25th minute. Obi placed a perfect shot into the upper right corner. The goalie was only able to jump and get a finger on it but not deflect and that evened the score at 1-1 and sent the Franconia faithful into a frenzy.
The second half produced several more chances for the Tigers but a few defensive breakdowns and a little too much passing trying to get that perfect setup ended the Tigers quest for a perfect season when Herndon was able to put 2 more tallies on the board and the Tigers just couldn't bury that perfect setup. The game ended with the Tigers on the short end of a 3-1 score.
The game was a very tough match from the outset and both teams seemed evenly matched and it was one of those game in which either team could have been victorious. The Tigers had their chances but were unable to convert those chances into goals.
Next Sunday the White Tigers look to rebound vs. CYA Earthquakes at Franconia Park. - MP |

9/25/05 - Tigers shutout BRYC Dynamites 11 - 0 Colby made a welcome "back" appearance and split goal tending duties with Darren. They combined for a shut out vs. BRYC Dynamites. Strong defense played a part in that each effort of BYRC Dynamites to make a charge, the defense was there to turn it back to the offense. Obi started the scoring off and was followed by........almost every Tiger. Most of the play was in the offensive zone and there were a lot of opportunities most converted, some off the mark. The offensive outburst led to a 11-0 shutout with multiple goals by Brett, Obi and Vince. Kyle and Andrew chipped in with a goal and assist and Charlie and James provided assists. Connor wins the team spirit award for showing up sick, looking like Casper the friendly ghost, and trying to play the game. Most of the play was in the BRYC zone and goals were manufactured on sharp passing and finding the open man with minimal touches on the ball. This was a real TEAM effort and that translated into the outcome of the game. - MP |
